Derby Volunteer Police Cadets
The Derby Volunteer Police Cadet Scheme is aimed at 16 year olds who are keen to be involved in a police-orientated youth group, and in particular to those who are interested in the police service as a future career.
The aims of the scheme are to give young people an insight into the many and varied aspects of policing, to make them aware of the role of the police in society, to develop their character, and to promote good citizenship.
These are some of the activities that cadets participate in during a two year service:
-
Learning about police procedures and criminal law
-
Team building activity weekends
-
Two 3 day expeditions
-
Inspection and drill
-
Crime prevention
-
Physical training
-
First Aid
For health and safety reasons it is not possible for cadets to take part in normal police operational activities, however, cadets are expected to assist at a variety of police community events and with crime reduction initiatives.
The scheme is also structured to allow attainment within the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme (Silver). With that emphasis, it may be that those who have already attained the Duke of Edinburgh Silver or Gold award may not find this of benefit to them.
Derby Cadets meet for two hours each week, with the exception of most school holiday periods. Cadets are asked to contribute subscriptions of £2 per week to assist with the running costs of the scheme. Regular attendance is expected.
Cadet intake takes place in September, to coincide with the local authority school year.
Please note that applications to the Derby scheme are restricted to those who are, or will be, 16 and no older by the start of the next academic year. They should reside within the Derby Divisional police area (co-terminus with Derby City Council, South Derbyshire District Council, and Erewash District Council areas).
Applications are considered on the basis of merit, with a structured selection process. Character references must be provided at the time of formal application. Applicants will be subject to a security screening process.
