About Special Constables

Volunteer Special Constables in Derbyshire can either work with a Safer Neighbourhood or reactive team helping to implement lasting solutions to local issues. Safer Neighbourhood Policing is all about having dedicated local teams making areas safer, cleaner and a more pleasant place to live.

The SNTs are made up of uniformed police officers, Police Community Support Officers| and Special Constables. They work in partnership with local agencies to address the concerns in their particular area. In Derbyshire our partners include all eight district councils, Derby City Council, Derbyshire County Council, the fire service, parish councils, the business community and other groups such as Neighbourhood Watch.

In addition to this vital role Derbyshire Special Constables have the opportunity to apply for attachments to specialist areas of policing for example the Roads Policing Department. These attachments would be offered on application and once a satisfactory period of duty has been undertaken on the SNT.

By volunteering with the Special Constabulary you can expect to develop your skills through your experiences on duty and the funded training provided. Many of the skills are transferable to the workplace and would be a positive benefit to your present employer or potential employer if you are currently looking for work. Many of our volunteers find that they have improved confidence by dealing with new situations whilst on police duty with their SNT.
