A driver had his car confiscated by police after being caught driving fast and revving his engine in the grounds of a school in Rocester.

Police in Ashbourne called at the driver’s address yesterday (Thursday, January 26) and seized his vehicle after reports of the man driving anti-socially around the grounds of Abbotsholme School on Friday, January 20.

The black Citroen Saxo was confiscated as it was the second time the driver been issued with a Section 59 warning in a 12 month Period.

He had been previously stopped by police on Derby Road, Ashbourne for speeding and the manner of his driving in November 2011

Police have the power to seize vehicles under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act if, after receiving a warning, a motorist drives their car carelessly or without consideration for other road users, and in a way which causes alarm, distress or annoyance.

The 20-year-old man now faces paying a fine of at least £150 to get the vehicle back.

Safer Neighbourhood team Sergeant Steve Edwards said: “We take road safety issues seriously and always listen to the concerns of local residents. Hopefully this will show other motorists throughout the Ashbourne area that nuisance driving won’t be tolerated.”

Officers regularly carry out checks to reduce road casualty risks, including monitoring speeding, seatbelt and other vehicle safety issues across the Ashbourne area.
