Residents in Staveley offered free property marking kits

Posted on 3rd February 2012

Dozens of Staveley residents have been offered free property marking kits and advice on how to keep their homes safe from thieves as part of a local police initiative.

Officers from the Staveley Safer Neighbourhood Team sent letters to homeowners to remind them to be security conscious and to offer to security mark valuable items.

The initiative was carried out in response to a number of burglaries across Staveley and Mastin Moor where thieves got in through unlocked windows and doors.

Residents who responded to the letters had their property, including TVs and laptops, marked by the team on Wednesday, February 1.

Each kit has a unique code that can be identified under UV light to help police return items that have been stolen and recovered to the owner.

Inspector Steve Ball, who is responsible for policing across Chesterfield borough, said: “Don’t advertise your home to thieves. By locking windows and doors, using security lights and keeping valuables out of view you can greatly reduce the risk of falling victim to this type of crime.”

Tackling burglaries is one of the Safer Neighbourhood team’s local priorities.
