Police are appealing for information after a statue was stolen from a graveyard in Derby.

The bronze statue was taken from a grave at Nottingham Road cemetery sometime between Wednesday, December 25, 2013 and Thursday, January 2.

PCSO Will McDermott, of the Chaddesden and Spondon Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team, has been making enquiries in the local area.

He said: “This statue is described as a large, bronze figurine of the Virgin Mary and holds a huge amount of sentimental value.

“This is very distressing as you can imagine for the family who visit the grave of their loved one and we appeal to anyone that might have information about this theft who has seen a statue of this description.

“We would urge anyone with any information about this incident to contact us straightaway.”

Anyone with information should contact Derbyshire police on 101, the non emergency number, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 quoting crime reference 229/14
