Shoppers in Chesterfield urged to keep purses under wraps in the run up to Christmas

Posted on 9th December 2016

Police in Chesterfield are reminding shoppers to keep their purses under wraps while shopping in the town centre on the run up to Christmas.

Officers from the Chesterfield Town Centre Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team are advising people to be alert while in the stores and streets during the busy festive period.

PCSO Hayley Grundy said: “The shops are much busier at this time of year and while it is understandably easy to get distracted, we don’t want people to be targeted by a thief.

“It is really important to always keep your purse and mobile phone safe inside your handbag and that your bag is securely closed. Keep your handbag close to you, ideally under an arm with the strap over your shoulder and avoid carrying large quantities of cash. You could also fit a chain to your purse to help prevent it from being removed from your bag.”

Shoppers are also encouraged to use a purse chain or bell, never to keep pin numbers written down and with bank cards, and to be vigilant around cash machines and tills by making sure no one is standing too close or looking over your shoulder.

The team are carrying out patrols and asking town centre stores to display posters to remind people to be vigilant.

PCSO Grundy added: “We just want people to be alert, and if they notice anyone acting suspiciously to report it to the police or shop staff, many who are linked by the Shop Watch radio scheme.”
