Appeal after spare wheels are taken from two vans in New Whittington

Posted on 23rd June 2014

Police are appealing for information after two Ford Transit vans had their spare wheel stolen.

The incidents happened overnight between Tuesday, June 17 and Wednesday, June 18 from vehicles parked on Brearley Avenue and London Street in New Whittington.

Officers are also advising van owners to take steps to help prevent their wheels from being stolen.

Insp. Russell Dakin, of the police community safety unit said: “Spare wheels can be quite costly to replace and it would take some effort for the offenders to remove it from underneath the van, so I would urge anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious to contact the police.

“Van owners can improve security by parking their vehicle in a locked garage, if they have one, or in a well-lit place and by parking their van close to walls or other vehicles to make it more difficult to get access to the place where spares are kept.”

People are also advised to consider reinforcing the straps which hold the wheel in place or to security mark their spare to make it easily identifiable.

Anyone with information should contact Derbyshire police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
