This Safer Neighbourhood area includes Whittington and Barrow Hill. It is covered by the Chesterfield North Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team and belongs to the Chesterfield Local Policing Unit. Barrow Hill is a small semi-rural residential area located within Chesterfield Borough Council and situated approximately four miles from Chesterfield Town Centre. Whittington is split into two villages - Old and New. There is a large recreational area separating both Old and New Whittington that includes a skate park and five-aside football pitch. Old Whittington contains several buildings of historical interest.

Deterring anti-social behaviour in local parks

Actions to be taken are as follows:
  • To deter any anti-social and nuisance behaviour throughout the area as the nights get lighter and during the summer months, the Safer Neighbourhood team will be carrying out increased patrols in parks and other public places.
  • Officers will be working to ensure youngsters stay safe when out and about.
  • The team will be working with partner agencies in a bid to set up possible diversionary activities to keep youngsters entertained, allow them to socialise with friends and provide an alternative to them being out on the streets.
  • The team will take positive action against those caught causing any anti-social behaviour and use restorative justice to deal with offenders where appropriate.

Actions to be taken are as follows:
  • High visibility patrols carried out in the area.
  • Advised members of the public to contact police or Crimestoppers if they suspect any drug dealing or illegal drug activity.
  • Leaflets handed out at community events to encourage reporting of drug dealing, and also signposting relevant agencies for help and support.
  • Information gained regarding drug dealing has been submitted to the relevant departments within the police for investigation.

  • Safer Neighbourhood officers carried out regular on-foot and cycle patrols in the area.
  • Officers engaged with those motorists who were causing a nuisance in the area and advised them how their actions were effecting those living close-by.
  • Two Section 59 warnings were issued to motorists following patrols in the area.

  • We worked closely with Chesterfield Borough Council and housing to prevent and investigate anti-social behaviour.
  • We gathered information from residents regarding activity and informed the relevant departments and agencies to enable enforcement action.
  • High visibility patrols were carried out within the area on a regular basis to offer reassurance to local residents.

  • High visibility patrols were carried out to speak to motorists and parents about considerate parking. The aim of the patrols were to make motorists aware of the dangers of parking too close to the school and ignoring the zigzag markings.
  • Community Speed Watch events were carried out with students from Mary Swanwick and New Whittington Primary Schools.
  • Talks were held in local schools to speak to children about the importance of road safety,

  • We liaised with the Roads Policing Unit and Derbyshire County Council to find proactive ways to tackle this priority.
  • We worked alongside schools in the area to speak to the children about the importance of road safety.

  • Carried out regular patrols both on bikes and on foot and advised those found to be causing a nuisance in the area.

I am Sergeant 2387 Matt Adams and I am responsible for this Safer Neighbourhood policing team.

I have been a police officer for more than 16 years, and have been a Sergeant for the last 10 years my service. I have worked in several areas including Derby city centre, Chaddesden, Long Eaton, Ripley, Dronfield and Clay Cross. 

I took up my current position in November 2016 and I am responsible for the newly formed Chesterfield North Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team, covering local policing bases at Newbold and Staveley.

 My priorities are to reduce anti-social behaviour and crime, alongside a commitment to provide a high quality service to the public by ensuring my teams are visible, approachable and work alongside partner agencies to target problems affecting the local community.
