Bakewell shoppers urged to be on their guard during festive season

Posted on 17th December 2013

Officers from Bakewell Safer Neighbourhood Team are reminding shoppers to be on their guard in the run up to Christmas.

The team will be out and about chatting to residents about crime prevention in a bid to crack down on theft over the festive season.

PCSO Hayley Grundy from the Bakewell Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “It’s easy to forget about security steps when you are joining the crowds of shoppers but thieves are opportunists and it only takes a second for them to steal your bag or purse.

“There are simple safety tips that you can take to make it harder for thieves to take your items, such as buying a bell or purse chain so that you will be alerted if someone tries to take them.

“Keep your items in a secure zipped bag and be on your guard to stop thieves getting their hands on your belongings.”

Purse chains are used to attach the purse to a zip inside a handbag, to help prevent the purse being stolen from the bag. They may also alert the shopper, who might feel their purse being ‘tugged’.

Bells are also used as a deterrent to thieves, as well as a reminder to people to make sure their purse is secure if they can hear it ringing.

Valuables such as mobile phones can also be registered for free on the secure online database www.immobilise.com. This allows police to quickly reunite people with their stolen belongings if they are recovered.
