Safer Neighbourhood officers are urging the public to be vigilant against computer software fraud, after a Bradwell resident was targeted by scammers.
The incident, which took place on Wednesday, February 11, involved a fraudster cold-calling the resident, claiming to be from the well-known computer company, Microsoft Windows.
The scammer was persistent in offering security advice and checks for the victim’s computer, calling several times before gaining access to the equipment and taking full control, meaning the resident couldn’t access their computer.
PCSO Anthony Boswell from the Hathersage and Tideswell Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “Our aim is to help raise awareness of this type of cybercrime to prevent local people from becoming victims of it and losing access to all their computer files.
“By taking a few simple safety precautions, residents can better protect themselves from computer fraudsters and scams.”
Crime prevention advice includes:
- Do not disclose personal information to organisations or people before verifying their credentials;
- Ensure that your computer has up-to-date anti-virus software and firewall installed;
- Ensure your browser is set to the highest level of security to prevent malware issues and computer crimes.
- Be extremely wary of post, phone calls or emails offering you business deals out of the blue. If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. Always question it.
