Police and pupils team up for New Mills speed checks

Pupils from St Georges Primary School in New Mills have been teaming up with their local PCSO to boost their knowledge on road safety.

PCSO Lee Baker from the New Mills and Hayfield Safer Neighbourhood Team visited the youngsters to offer reassurance after the children raised the issue of motorists speeding past the school.

During the visit on Wednesday, February 18, Year 5 and 6 pupils were given the chance to head out with PCSO Baker to carry out speed checks along Church Lane, New Mills.

During the checks the children took it in turns to use the speed gun whilst the rest of the group recorded the speeds to use as part of a class project.

Throughout the morning, PCSO Baker also spoke to the children about the importance of road safety and how they can each help to keep the younger pupils safe by passing on their knowledge.

PCSO Lee Baker from the New Mills and Hayfield Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “The visit was a great opportunity to speak to the children about road safety by looking around outside the school to see what we can do to make it safer.

“The children looked at road markings and also pointed out safe crossing areas. The youngsters plan on speaking to younger age groups about the importance of staying safe and sensible when out near roads, and also plan on creating posters to highlight the issue to passing motorists.

“Although we carried out the speed checks on a quiet morning, the pupils were able to see that although vehicles often look like they are driving fast they were all abiding by the 30mph speed limit, clocking in between 16mph and 25mph.”

Mrs Brown, Headteacher at St Georges Primary School said: “Visits like this can provide education for life, starting from now whilst they are at school learning about road safety to when they become to be drivers themselves.

“The visit helped to really make them aware of the dangers of speeding, especially around schools where parents and young children cross regularly.

“The information from the visit will also be used to form part of a class project, including data handling and poster design.”
