Residents in Bolsover and Barlborough have been getting a stark reminder to keep their property secure by a local PCSO, who has been out on the prowl posing as an opportunist thief.
During December PCSO Ben Perry, of the Bolsover Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team, has been on the lookout for open windows, unlocked doors and valuables which had been left on show
The campaign, which has been carried out successfully by the team on previous occasions, also involves a uniformed police officer, who accompanies ‘Smash and Carry Harry’ to offer residents advice on crime prevention.
It is has also been promoted on the Bolsover and Clowne Safer Neighbourhood team Twitter accounts to encourage residents to keep an eye out for ‘Harry’.
PCSO Perry said: “We always encourage residents to report suspicious activity, and that is what I want people to do when they see ‘Smash and Carry Harry’ as well as remind people to keep their property secure.
“The great news is that I did get asked what I was doing by one member of the public, and one person also reported to the officer that they had seen ‘Harry’ acting suspiciously. Information like this, in a real situation, could really help officers to prevent an offence, or stop a thief in his tracks.”
PCSO Perry added: “Unfortunately we did come across numerous insecurities, but we hope that by making people aware that they will take on board our advice and make their homes and cars less inviting to a would-be opportunist thief.”
