Motorists offered free number plate security devices in Derby

Posted on 16th June 2014

Motorists are being invited to get their vehicle security into gear by being offered free anti-theft number plate screws.

Safer Neighbourhood officers from Osmaston and Derby City Council’s crime prevention team will be hosting two events over the next fortnight where security screws will be used to help reduce this type of crime.

The screws are designed to make it difficult for thieves to remove them and can reduce the chances of your number plates being stolen.

The first event will take place at Sainsbury’s, off Osmaston Park Road, between 10.00am and 2.30pm on Friday, June 20 where the team will be fitting screws and issuing crime prevention information.

The second event will take place in Dunelm car park on Ascot Drive between 10.00am and 2.20pm on Friday, June 27.

Sgt Simon Hawley who manages the team said: “Stolen number plates can be used by criminals to hide the identity of vehicles, which are then used to commit crime.

“It is important that victims of this crime report the theft to police as soon as possible. This gives opportunity for officers to stop any vehicles bearing the stolen plates before they are involved in any offences.

“By having these free screws fitted to your vehicle, you become less likely to be a victim of this crime.

“It’s an easy crime prevention step drivers can take to protect themselves from opportunist criminals.”

Drivers simply have to visit the team at the above venues and the screws will be fitted for free.

Motorists can also take the screws away and fit them themselves.

Please note between 12.00 and 12.30pm on each date, the fitters will be taking a short break and screws will not be fitted during this period.
