An officer from our Derby City Centre Safer Neighbourhood Team is asking for help to identify a woman suspected of stealing an 86-year-old woman’s purse.

The theft took place whilst the lady was sitting in the Swiss Cottage cafe on St Peter’s Street between 12.15pm and 1pm on Wednesday, October 10.

Her purse containing a bank card and around £20 was taken from her handbag and then the card was used in a nearby supermarket.

The officer investigating the theft is PC Harry Wood, who said: “To steal from a lady of this age is such a heartless thing to do. To help us try and find who is responsible we would like to know who the person in the image is so we can talk to her about the theft.”

If you think you can help identify the woman in the image please make contact with Harry by using one of the following contact methods, quoting the reference number 18*486758

You can also anonymously contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111 or by visiting

PC Wood also urged others to be aware of such crimes; “At this time of year we know that the city and shopping centres get busier and people can be more distracted than normal. We would advise that you are always aware of your bag and that if possible it is kept so others can’t get to it.

“Don’t leave bags hanging off the backs of chairs in cafes or restaurants. Consider getting a set of bag bells that will ring if anyone tries to tamper with your bag, all of our Safer Neighbourhood teams have access to these to give away so get in touch with us if you would like some.”
