City centre officers team up with Age UK and partner agencies to support over 50s community

Posted on 18th November 2014

Visitors to Eagle Centre Market will have the opportunity to talk to their local officers who will be attending a community event next week.

Age UK will be hosting a series of Wellbeing events over the next six months which will be supported by the Police, and Derbyshire Fire Service as well as other agencies that offer support and advice to the elderly.

The theme for the first Wellbeing event will be Diabetes and Stroke and it will run from 10.30am to 12.30pm on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 inside the Eagle Centre Market Derby.

PC Abdul Rafique of the city centre team said: “This is a great opportunity for the over 50s who want to obtain information in relation to their health as well as speak to local services that may be able to assist in their personal safety.

“We encourage you to pop along to this one but if you cannot make it there will be further events held in the future where we will be in attendance.

“We also hold regular fortnightly surgeries at the Eagle Centre Office after we discovered there was a need for us to hold a police surgery in the city centre where elderly members of the public could speak to use about issues in connection with local policing.

“We work closely with Ray Gumbley, the Derby Services & Advocacy Manager of Age UK Derby and Derbyshire and support his work by giving talk’s to over 50’s groups and advise on personal safety and home security.

"We try to encourage people to talk and report their worries rather than suffer in silence."

There will also be a chance to meet the Deputy Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner Hardyal Dhindsa next Tuesday at the first Wellbeing Event.
