Abbey SNT Refugee and Asylum Seeker meeting

Officers from our Abbey Safer Neighbourhood Team have been meeting with a group of refugees and asylum seekers to talk about British policing.

The event took place yesterday, Tuesday, March 20 and was organised by Upbeat Communities, a charity that works closely with the Red Cross in order to help refugees and asylum seekers rebuild their lives in the UK.

Pc Steve Phillips and PCSO Gabby Young (pictured) attended a lunch meeting in Derby, spoke to the group and answered questions about British policing and law.

Sergeant Alex Wood, who is in charge of the team, said: “We were very pleased to have been invited to come and meet with the group.

“It is fair to say that the police operate in a very different way in many of the countries that the attendees come from. The idea was to be approachable and dispel some pre-conceptions that may have existed.

“The event was a success and we are certainly happy to attend similar events in the future.”
