The residents, shoppers and workers in Ilkeston Town Centre have a new police officer on their beat.

PC Malc Atherton joined the Ilkeston Town Safer Neighbourhood Team on Monday, November 7 replacing PC Chris Hamilton who has returned to a reactive policing role.

Malc has been a police officer for 13 years and has previously worked as a reactive officer in Ilkeston as well as Ripley.

PC Atherton said: “I am really pleased to be working as a Safer Neighbourhood officer in this area and it is something I chose to do. I know the area well having previously lived and worked here. There is a strong community spirit and I am looking forward to meeting with as many people as possible.

“I know that there are issues with street drinking in the town centre and at this time of year shoplifting can increase so I will be working hard with the retailers and our partners to help solve these problems.”

Anyone who would like to contact Malc or the team can do so by calling 101  or send them a message online by visiting the Contact Us section of our website here
