Residents in Derby and South Derbyshire had the chance to pick up free security screws for number plates along with crime prevention advice from the police.
Officers from the local Safer Neighbourhood policing teams held events at Willington Health Centre in Willington and the Sainsbury’s store on Peak Drive in Sinfin.
The number plate screws are special ‘one way’ devices which simply replace the standard screws which are fitted to number plates to prevent it from being removed by a thief.
On Wednesday, September 17, 40 vehicles had the screws fitted in Willington and on Friday, September 19, 56 cars were fitted with the screws at the Sinfin event.
Police Community Support Officer Karen Coldicott said: “We’ve been offering these number plate screws to help local residents reduce the potential of number plates being taken by offenders who may put them onto another vehicle.
“Potentially they might commit crimes such as driving off from petrol forecourts without paying for fuel or try to avoid speeding or parking penalties but having thesescrews fitted will make it much harder for the plates to be stolen in the first place.”
“The event was a great success and saw many people increasing the security on their valuables to deter criminals.”
