Residents and gardeners of South Derbyshire are being invited to come and have a chat with their local cops at two events in local garden centres.

Officers from the Mercia and Melbourne Safer Neighbourhood Teams are holding the events as part of the ‘street meet’ initiative being run by the teams to meet local residents and visitors and talk about policing issues that may be affecting them.

They will also be offering free crime prevention equipment and advice as well as letting people know about the Safer Homes South Derbyshire scheme. This is a free service that is working to improve security in the homes of older (60+) and vulnerable people who live in South Derbyshire.

The scheme works by installing security equipment free of charge, including door chains, window alarms and spy holes.

The Melbourne Safer Neighbourhood Team will be in the Garden Restaurant and Coffee shop, Swarkestone Nursery and Garden Centre, Lowes Lane, Swarkestone, Derby between 2pm and 3.30pm on Friday, November 11

The Mercia Safer Neighbourhood Team will be in the restaurant at the Wyevale Garden Centre, Burton Road, Findern between 2pm and 3.30pm on Monday, November 14.

PCSO Kerry Wallington-Waite from the Mercia Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “The teams are always out and about in the areas of South Derbyshire that they cover but it is not possible to see everyone. By being in a neutral, relaxed setting at a certain time we hope that anyone who may want to come and have a chat about a policing issue that is bothering them may feel more comfortable doing so.

“We will also be taking the opportunity of letting people know about South Derbyshire CVS Safer Homes scheme and how they can access it.”
