The police officer in charge of policing in South Derbyshire has thanked the public after their help in the jailing of a thief.

Earlier this month we asked for help from the public in identifying the person in the attached footage. The footage was released after a sat nav was stolen from a car on Mallow Close, Stenson Fields, Derby in the early hours of Saturday August 26.

As a result of the appeal appearing on our Facebook account we received a call from a member of the public naming the man in the footage.

Last Friday, September 7, we arrested George Day, 35 years of Arkel Green , Sinfin for the theft from a motor vehicle and further offences of shoplifting and theft from a person.

The following day he appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty to the theft from the car, a theft from person and nine other offences of shoplifting in the Derby area. Day was sentenced to 26 weeks imprisonment.

Inspector Kate Bateman said: “ I want to thank the public for their response to this appeal that led to the arrest of the offender for this and a further ten offences of theft in Derby and South Derbyshire.

“We are pleased that justice has now quickly been served.”
