A man has been jailed for life for murdering his former girlfriend at her home in Somercotes in September last year.

Cornelius-Brown

Cornelius Brown (23) was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court today and was told he must serve a minimum of 20 years.

Brown, of Greenhill Lane, Riddings, pleaded guilty to the murder of Jade Riley-Ward last month.

Ms Riley-Ward was found dead by emergency services at her home on Burke Drive on September 22, 2012.

A post mortem examination revealed the 30-year-old died from multiple stab wounds.

Detective Chief Inspector Karen Pearson, who led the investigation, said: “This was a sustained and brutal attack on a defenceless young woman.

“Jade had everything to live for and lost her life in the most senseless way.

“I believe the sentence handed down today reflects the severity and nature of Brown’s actions. He will now spend a long time behind bars reflecting on what he did.

“My thoughts remain with Jade’s family and I hope today’s sentence will now allow them to try come to terms with their loss and attempt to move on with their lives.”
