Police in South Derbyshire want to reassure parents that rumours alleging child abduction in Leicestershire are without foundation.
Officers in Derbyshire were alerted, by reporters from the Burton Mail, to a leaflet suggesting police in Ashby had issued warnings about allegations of children being approached in supermarket car parks.
Leicestershire Police are making enquiries into these claims but have no information to suggest the allegations are true.
A Derbyshire police spokesman said: “From time to time rumours and false information are spread on social media sites. These hoaxes can cause a lot of distress to people who receive them and believe they are true.
“Anyone who receives any information that has supposedly come from the police can check its validity by ringing 101 or looking on the police website www.derbyshire.police.uk”
Leicestershire Police are trying to find out who is responsible for originating the current information and has reminded people that it is an offence to publish malicious or false information.
