Teenager is handed suspended sentence after arson forces county leisure centre closure

Posted on 9th December 2014

An 18-year-old has been given a suspended prison sentence after admitting setting a fire which closed a leisure centre for several months.

Konrad Stoch set fire to a bag and placed it in a bin outside Ashbourne Leisure Centre, in Station Road, at about 11pm on July 26.

The fire then grew out of control and spread to the leisure centre building itself, severely damaging a filter unit for the swimming pool.

Derbyshire County Council was forced to shut the pool for several weeks while repair works were carried out.

Stoch, of Highfield Road, Ashbourne, was arrested after the offence and later charged with arson.

He pleaded guilty at Derby Crown Court on Wednesday, December 3.

He was given a 20-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. He was also given a supervision order and must carry out 120 hours of unpaid work.
