Three prisoners who went on the run from Sudbury open prison have been charged with escaping from lawful custody.
Almas Ullah, Daniel Leech and Wayne Smart absconded from the prison in November but have now all been recaptured.
Convicted robber Ullah left the prison on November 21. The 27-year-old, whose last address was in Bradford, was arrested in Huddersfield. He appeared at Middlesbrough Magistrates’ Court on Monday, December 8, where he was remanded in custody.
Leech was serving a four-year sentence for attempted robbery and possession of an imitation firearm when he absconded on November 25. The 26-year-old was arrested in his hometown of Stoke-on-Trent and appeared at North Staffordshire Magistrates’ Court on Friday, December 5. He was remanded in custody.
Smart, 37, left the prison on November 26. The prisoner, who is from Leicester, was serving four years for burglary. He was rearrested and appeared before Leicester Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, December 9, where he was also remanded in custody.
All three prisoners will appear at crown court at a later date.
Police would like to thank anyone who responded to appeals for information on the whereabouts of the absconders after they had left the open prison.
