Officers are now investigating the possibility that Steven Overton, last seen at his home in Grove Lane, Harborne, may have travelled to Cumbria or Derbyshire.
He was reported missing by his mother and an investigation was immediately launched. The last known sighting of the 55-year-old gardener was driving his distinctive brown Vauxhall Astra 51 plate on the M5 southbound near to junction 4a.
However, he is known to have recently visited Cumbria and Derbyshire, and officers believe he could have headed back there.
Other forces have also been alerted to his disappearance and are on the lookout for his car.
Sergeant Neata Simpson, from Birmingham Police, said: "This is totally out of character for Steven to go missing like this.
"His mum is very worried as are we. We just want to know that he is safe and well."
Steven who has recently lost his father, is described as white, around 6ft tall with thinning receding hair. At the time of his disappearance it is believed that he was wearing a two toned grey anorak and cream coloured trousers.
Steven or anyone who has seen him recently should call police on 101.
