Residents remain evacuated from their homes in Newhall

Police and army bomb disposal experts are continuing to deal with potentially volatile material found in a flat in Newhall near Swadlincote.

Several controlled explosions have been carried out overnight by army officers.

Up to 200 people were evacuated last night (Saturday July 26) after the substances were found during the search of a flat on Belvoir Crescent in Newhall.

A 55-year-old man, who was arrested yesterday, remains in police custody.

Superintendent Paul Callum, who is in charge of the incident today, said: "The safety of the public is paramount in these situations.  We apologise for any inconvenience to the evacuees.  We will let them return to their homes as soon as we can be sure the area is safe."

Derbyshire County Council emergency planning officers have worked with the police and voluntary groups to house and look after the people who have been evacuated from their homes.
