Detectives investigating death of walker in city street release CCTV footage in appeal for information

Posted on 25th February 2015

Police have released CCTV footage of two potential witnesses as part of an investigation into the death of a man in Derby.

Melvyn Hargreaves was assaulted in the early hours of Friday, January 2 on Mercian Way in Derby. The 71-year-old later died.

The CCTV footage shows a man and woman police believe may have information that could help the investigation.

The couple are shown walking up Babington Lane from the St Peter’s Street end to the corner of Gower Street, at about 12.35am on January 2.

They are thought to have then turned onto Gower Street and later onto Green Lane.

Officers believe they may have seen a man suspected of assaulting Mr Hargreaves.

Still images of the couple were issued in January but detectives are hoping the moving images may help the couple identify themselves, or might help friends or family recognise them.

The woman was wearing a white top, black jacket and either dark trousers or possibly a skirt. The man was wearing dark clothing and trainers with a white sole and white toe area.

Anyone who recognises the two people in the CCTV footage should call Detective Sergeant Chris Waters on 101, quoting crime reference 409/15.

Samuel Watts (22), of Forman Street, Derby, has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent in connection with the incident.

Members of the public can also give information anonymously if they wish, by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
