Derby assault victim named

Police have named the man who died after being assaulted on Mercian Way in Derby on Friday January 2.

Melvyn Hargreaves (71) of Rosengrave Street in Derby died this morning in the Queen's Medical Centre, where he was being treated for head injuries.

Mr Hargreaves was assaulted between 12.15am – 12.30am at the junction of Mercian Way and Gerard Street as he and a friend were walking dogs.

A post mortem examination to determine the cause of Mr Hargreaves’ death will be carried out by a Home Office pathologist tomorrow (Tuesday January 6).

Samuel Watts (22) of Forman Street Derby appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court this morning charged with causing grievous bodily harm to Mr Hargreaves.  He was remanded in custody to appear at Derby Crown Court on Monday January 19.
