Murder investigation launched in Derby

Police have launched a murder investigation after the death of a man who was assaulted on Friday.

The assault happened between 12.15am and 12.30am on Friday January 2 on the junction of Mercian Way and Gerard Street in Derby when a 71-year-old local man and his friend were walking her dogs.

The victim was taken to hospital and was being treated in the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham for head injuries.  He died in the early hours of this morning (Monday January 5).

Samuel Watts (22) of Forman Street in Derby was arrested on Friday afternoon and on Sunday January 4 was charged with causing grievous bodily harm and common assault.  He will be appearing at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court today (Monday January 5, 2015).

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident or anyone with information to contact them on 101, quoting incident number 16/02//1/15, or to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
