Van drivers in parts of Alvaston offered free security marking for tools

Posted on 12th March 2015

Van drivers living in the Alvaston, Sinfin and Chellaston areas are being urged to take up an offer of free security marking.

Officers from Derby East Safer Neighbourhood Team say they have seen an increase recently in crimes where tools have been stolen from vans.

To combat the problem, they are offering to mark people’s tools for free so that if they are stolen, they can be returned to their rightful owners.

Officers will visit homes in the area, marking tools with the owner’s house number and postcode. Marking them will also make it harder for thieves to sell the tools on.

Any van owners living within the Alvaston, Boulton, Osmaston, Sinfin, Shelton Lock and Chellaston areas are eligible.

Sergeant Simon Hawley, who is behind this initiative, said “The theft of tools can be devastating for the self-employed person, who needs them in order to earn their living.

“By marking your tools, you are making them less desirable to thieves and providing a way of identifying them so that if they are stolen, police can return them to their rightful owner.”

If you are interested in having your tools marked, please email and a local officer will contact you to arrange a visit. Alternatively, call PCSO Hayley Orchard on 101.
