Detectives investigating an assault on a taxi driver are trying to trace two potential witnesses.

At around 11.15pm last night, police were called to Abbey Street following reports that a taxi driver had been assaulted outside the Ye Olde Spa Inne.

The 59-year-old was parked in the street near the pub when he was approached by two men who assaulted him and took his car keys.

When officers arrived, an Asian man driving a yellow taxi and woman in the pub car park told them which direction the suspects had run off in.

Police are trying to trace these two people in case they witnessed the assault.

Two men aged 25 and 27 were arrested nearby on suspicion of robbery. They remain in custody and are being questioned by officers.

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
