Travellers removed from Spondon parkland

Posted on 21st July 2017

A group of travellers who had set up camp on playing fields in Spondon have today been moved on by police.

The group arrived at the recreation ground off Willowcroft Road earlier in the week and had been served with an eviction notice by Derby City Council.

However due to a number of concerns, our officers removed them using section 61 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act.

The majority of the group left immediately and our officers will be staying at the site to make sure the remaining vehicles are collected.

Inspector Lauren Woods, who leads policing in the area, said: “The city council served the eviction notice, which is the proper course of action when travellers arrive on public land.

“However we noticed that there was an increase in the waste being left by the group and so we decided quickly to use section 61.

“This is available to us in certain circumstances and on this occasion, waste being strewn across the fields meant we could evict them using these powers.

“The park is now in the process of being cleaned. We know that travellers will at times come to rest on local areas and the majority do so and move on peacefully.

“However we will not tolerate the level of hazardous pollution that is being caused when some members of the travelling community act like that.”
