Detectives investigating a series of serious sex attacks in Spondon and Darley Abbey have received several phone calls to a new, dedicated appeal hotline.

The phone number went live at 7am today and detectives say they are pleased with the response so far. Many people have also emailed a special appeals inbox to pass on information.

Superintendent Tracy Harrison said: “I want to thank everyone who has been in touch with us so far. The calls and emails that have come in today have provided us with new lines of inquiry and we will be looking into them all.

“Some people have given us names, others have been in touch with sightings of a man matching the description of the suspect and we are taking these calls seriously.

The appeal line and email address were launched in response to a series of assaults. We believe the same man is responsible for the following crimes;

  • On Saturday, September 27 2014, a teenaged girl was sexually assaulted on a footpath between West Park Road and Acorn Way at around 8.50pm
  • On Monday, September 7 2015, a woman was subject to a serious sexual attack within Darley Park at around 5.40pm. This crime occurred in the nature reserve close to South Avenue.
  • On Tuesday, December 22 2015, a woman was subjected to a serious sexual assault on the same footpath between West Park Road and Acorn Way at about 6.40pm.
  • On Thursday, February 16 2017, a woman was subjected to a serious sexual assault in the area of Stoney Lane, Spondon at 11am.

Officers have been distributing appeal leaflets across Derby today and have been handing out attack alarms to women.

Some officers, together with the mobile police station, have been at Asda in Spondon all day and will remain there in the coming weeks.

Supt Harrison said: “The response we have had from the public today while on patrol has been great. What I would ask is that if you have information and haven’t come forward yet, please get in touch.”

The man is believed to be aged between late teens and 40 years old and is described as 5ft 8ins to 6ft tall. He is of a medium or stocky build and is said to have a round/chubby face. He has been described as wearing a black hooded top. He also wore black or dark grey tracksuit bottoms and dark grey or black trainers. In the most recent attack he wore a dark coloured, zip up jacket which is described as being a shiny material.

During one of the crimes, he carried a dark drawstring bag and was seen carrying a can of ‘Monster’ energy drink.
