Youth Engagement

All the terrorist groups who pose a threat to us seek to radicalise and recruit people to their cause, but the percentage of people who are prepared to support violent extremism in this country is very small. It is significantly greater amongst young people.

The youngest person convicted of terrorism-related offences in this country in recent years was 16 – 15 and in school at the time of recruitment by a terrorist group. At least three separate terrorist operations in this country have involved people who became involved in extremism at a school age and the majority of referrals to the Channel programme have been under 25, with most aged between 15 and 19 years.

The Prevent Team is there to support and protect vulnerable individuals susceptible to radicalisation and prevent them being drawn into terrorist activity. We work in a ‘pre-criminal space’ to ensure that individuals are diverted away before any crime is committed.

We are at present in the process of organising a youth forum to create a pathway of communication for young people to ensure they play a meaningful part in building a great relationship between them and the Prevent team.
