Students learn about police during station visit

PCSO Steve Bowlzer shows a young student how it feels to be arrested.

Teenagers from Saint John Houghton Catholic School have been learning about the law on a recent visit to Ilkeston Police Station.

The group of Year 11 students visited the station at the end of January and were given a tour of custody, the cells, the fingerprinting suite and various police vehicles.

The students are currently studying for the Unit Award Scheme and requested a visit to the station as a way of enhancing their knowledge of the criminal justice system. Some students also took part in role-plays to develop their knowledge of being arrested or how it feels to be the victim of a crime.

PC Louise Stevenson said: "In the next part of their studies the students will be given a presentation by Derbyshire Crown Prosecution Service and be visiting Crown Court to understand the full process of the criminal justice system.

"We hope that the tour around Ilkeston Police Station has improved the students understanding of our work and will help them with their studies in the future."
