Derbyshire Constabulary has today published the results of its local confidence surveys.

From April 1st 2009 a new single performance measure around public confidence was introduced by the Home Office.

The aim of this was for all forces in England and Wales to increase public confidence in policing.

As part of this all forces this year have had to undertake surveys to ascertain what people's perception were of how both the police and local councils were tackling anti-social behaviour and crime.

In Derbyshire the surveys were conducted between September 2009 and January 2010 and were delivered to 21,000 residents to complete.

A total of 5,447 responses were returned by post from across the county, covering each of the nine Derbyshire districts.

According to the responses 47 per cent of people agreed that the police and local councils were dealing with anti-social behaviour and crime issues that matter in their area.

And 73 per cent of people said they were confident in their local police.

Deputy Chief Constable Alan Goodwin said: "The force's overriding priority is to provide a high quality policing service to the people of Derbyshire.

"We have produced exceptional results with seven consecutive years of reduction in all crime areas. Anti-social behaviour has been reduced every year for the past four years.

"The force has made great strides in providing a more victim focused service and making communities feel involved and safe in their neighbourhoods.

"But we still want to do more to increase people's confidence in the work we are doing and improve the quality of service we deliver to them.

"The survey has given us a benchmark to work from and the determination is there to do all we can to further improve confidence in us from our communities.

"We will go away and analyse these results to help us identify the specific areas we need to improve in and look at what we can put in place with local councils and partners to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour issues."
