Drivers in Buxton were reminded about safe motoring last week in a joint operation between police, CREST and VOSA.

The Buxton Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team, officers from the Roads Policing Unit and CREST (Casualty Reduction and Enforcement Support Team) joined staff from VOSA (Vehicle and Operator Services Agency) to check cars and their drivers were road safe and legal.

PCs Anna Gaskell and Sarah Crosthwaite of the Buxton Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team speak to a motorist.

They targeted the main A6 near the town centre last Thursday (February 25) and during the day they issued a number of fixed penalty notices and warnings to:

In addition they also found:

Twenty-two vehicles with defects which seriously affected their roadworthiness. They were issued with prohibitions to stop them from going onto a public highway. The owner then has to put the vehicle through an MOT before they can remove the prohibition.

Fifteen vehicles with tinted windows which were below the legal level for driver visibility. All drivers removed the tints from their vehicle.

Nine vehicles with less serious defects, where owners were given 14 days to repair their vehicle.

One motorist also had their car taken off the road and was reported for summons for driving without insurance.

PC Anna Gaskell of the Buxton Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "We often hear from residents that they have concerns about road safety and traffic issues.

"By working alongside CREST and VOSA, we have been able to target some of those issues and I hope it will also act as a reminder to all motorists that they have a responsibility to do what they can to keep the roads safe for all users, including themselves and their passengers."

The Buxton Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team will also be looking into road safety and speeding along Hardwick Square South during the next three months, after it was set as priority for the team.
