Wirksworth police officer in marathon
A Wirksworth police officer is taking part in the London marathon to raise money for Cancer Research.
PC Doug Eyre, of the Wirksworth Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team will be taking part in the 26 mile run in memory of two former colleagues who have died from the illness.
He will race in the memory of former Derbyshire police officers Simon Kreibich and Keith Woolliscroft.
Both officers had strong links to the Wirksworth area, with Keith living in the town and Simon working from Wirksworth for many years.
Doug said: "Unfortunately we all know someone who has been affected by cancer and I hope that the run will show that both Keith and Simon are still in our memories and that the funds will go towards helping other people and families who have been touched by Cancer."
The 44-year-old father of three has been training hard, running about 40 to 50 miles a week and cycling to and from work.
He has also lost around two-stone as a result of his fitness campaign, which was sparked by him joining the Derbyshire Constabulary Cycle to Work Scheme.
The cycle to work scheme was an initiative introduced by the force for employees to encourage greener, cleaner transport and a healthier workforce.
Doug said: "Cycling to work has really helped me to improve my fitness, and given me the motivation to do the marathon. I would recommend it to anyone.
"I'm aiming to raise as much money as possible, but I would really like to raise a minimum of £500."
The Virgin London Marathon takes place on Sunday, April 25. To sponsor PC Eyre visit the website www.runningsponsorme.org/douglaseyre.
