Three men have been charged with attempted theft after witnesses reported seeing a man climb into the back of a van as it travelled through Oakerthorpe.

The men, two aged 44 and one aged 49, are all from Birmingham and are due to appear before magistrates in Derby in September.

The van was travelling through Oakerthorpe at about 9.45am on Monday, May 5 when it stopped at a set of lights at Fourlane Ends.

Witnesses reported seeing a silver Ford Mondeo pull up behind the van, a passenger get out and open the back doors to the van.

He climbed in and the truck, which was transporting cigarettes, travelled on toward Matlock. The truck driver was unaware of the incident.

Police stopped the truck and a Ford Mondeo in Matlock and arrested three men on suspicion of attempted theft.
