The Derbyshire Police Authority is an independent body responsible for monitoring the work of Derbyshire Constabulary.
There are 43 Police Authorities in England and Wales, each of which oversees the work of its local police force.
Police Authorities are made up of local people and together with the Home Secretary and chief police officers, they are responsible for the management of policing in England and Wales.
Derbyshire Police Authority is made up of 17 members: seven county councillors, two city councillors and eight independent members.
The Councillor members of the Police Authority are appointed by their respective local authority (Derbyshire County Council and Derby City Council) on an annual basis.
The representation of political parties on the Police Authority is based on the number of seats for the county and city area as a whole.
The current political make up of the Police Authority is:
- 4 Conservative
- 3 Labour
- 2 Liberal Democrat
From 1st October 2008, Lay Justices were not longer included as members of the Police Authority, so membership is made up for nine councillors and eight independents.
Independent members are appointed by the Police Authority for four years under the terms of the Police Authority Regulations 2008 (regulation 9). Applicants go through a recruitment process involving an Independent Selection Panel, including representatives from the Police Authority and the Home Secretary, together with an independent assessor.
