ROB Garnham has been elected as the new Chair of the Association of Police Authorities (APA).

Following his election today (Wednesday, September 16) at the Annual General Meeting Mr Garnham (pictured, right), said: "I am delighted to be elected as APA Chair, and I look forward to working on behalf of police authorities across England, Wales and Northern Ireland to ensure that local people have a say in policing.

"Policing faces many challenges ahead, so it is imperative that communities are put at the heart of any developments that are made, and can justifiably have confidence that the police are working on their behalf.

"As part of the tripartite relationship which governs our policing, police authorities have an increasingly important role to play in ensuring those community voices are heard, and I look forward to ensuring this process continues.

"As Chair, I foresee the importance of the APA increasing and it having a clearer and much more focused role in the cluttered world of police governance. We owe it to those we represent, the public, to ensure their interests, concerns and wishes are represented at the very highest levels."

Rob Garnham, who succeeds Bob Jones, has been a member of the APA Board since 2007 and is Chair of Gloucestershire Police Authority.
