Have YOUR Say

Have Your Say - Chesterfield 2009

THE 'HAVE YOUR SAY' programme is the largest single face to face consultation the Derbyshire Police Authority and the Constabulary undertake with Derbyshire communities.

The objective is to find out what the people of Derbyshire think about their policing services. The roadshows also provide the opportunity for people to speak to members of their Safer Neighbourhood Teams about local issues.

The 2009 events - which ran from June through to the end of September - were very well received by the Derbyshire public.

Another programme of Have Your Say roadshows will begin in spring 2010. An evaluation of the 2009 programme is available here and a full report will be published soon.

The first event in 2009 was held on June 5 at the Heanor branch of Tesco and the final event was at the University of Derby, Kedleston Road campus on September 23. Some events ran at weekends and into the evening to make it easier for people to participate.

This year more than 2,620 people were questioned at 17 events across the county.

Custody Visiting

Derbyshire Police Authority has a statutory duty to establish and maintain an Independent Custody Visiting (ICV) Scheme.

Volunteers visit individuals held in police custody to check that their welfare is in accordance with the rules and regulations as outlined in the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE) and associated Codes of Practice relating to detainees.

Independent Custody Visitors are members of the public and are appointed for three years. Visits are carried out in pairs. Their role is to look, listen and observe and report back to the Police Authority on their findings. The Scheme plays an important part in maintaining police accountability to the local community.
