DERBYSHIRE Police Authority is inviting local people to have a more direct say in the way their area is policed.
The Authority is publishing a leaflet highlighting the county's record in tackling crime and delivering top quality services to local people - despite having one of the country's worst-funded forces. Copies of the Local Policing Summary (pictured, right) will be dropping on to the doormats of the county's 450,000 homes from the end of this month - and it includes an invitation to readers to volunteer to be consulted regularly on policing issues.
The report pledges: "One of Derbyshire Police Authority's key roles is to ensure local people have a voice in the way their policing service is provided."
Along with all other police authorities, Derbyshire is required by law to publish a local policing summary as part of the Government's Police Reform Programme.
It provides an easy-to-read guide to the force's performance in 2008/2009 as well as a look ahead to how it aims to continue improving.
The leaflet includes a personal message from the commander of each of the four policing divisions in Derbyshire and explains how they have tackled local challenges over the past year.
The Summary also explains the role of the Police Authority in monitoring the performance of the county force. This move to improve understanding of the Police Authority's role as an independent body of local people and councillors is linked to a competition, where readers can win family days out at Derbyshire attractions.
Janet Birkin, Chairman of Derbyshire Police Authority, welcomed the report, which also explains the restraints placed on the county police budget next year by central Government intervention. She said: "We have had challenging times in the past and only through teamwork have we managed to deliver good results for policing in Derbyshire.
"Over the coming months we will face even greater challenges and I know we will tackle them effectively."
