Frequently Asked Questions
I have always wanted to sing in a choir but I'm not sure if I will be good enough. How can I find out?Don't worry! Many people have the same fears and it shouldn't be a concern to you. We are not looking for the next Pavarotti but someone who enjoys singing and can put notes together to a reasonable standard.
But if I am not good enough what will happen? This really depends in the Musical Director. At the moment there is no audition process for the choir. It may take a while for you to find the section of the choir that suits you best. In order to help you may be moved around at the beginning to help you find where you feel most comfortable with your voice range. If you feel you are not happy with the way you are singing you will be free to leave the choir. At the end of the day you need to be happy and it is YOUR happiness that is important to US.
Just one thing... I am not a policeman so can I still join?In most cases the answer to this is YES! Many members of the choir are civilians who do their bit for the police force by helping to promote police and public relations by working with the choir. Members of the choir have access to the police station where we practice. Therefore everyone who applies to join the choir is security checked against the Police National Computer. If a record is found the choir may consult the Chief Constable for guidance.
How big is the commitment I need to make to the Choir? We rehearse every Monday evening from early September to late April, Bank Holidays excluded. We perform 3 concerts in any 4 weeks normally on a Friday or a Saturday evening during October and April.
At present choir members are expected to attend at least two thirds of the total number of rehearsals and concerts. However as membership of the choir is voluntary we do apply an amount of flexibility if there is an acceptable reason why you should not attend.
All this sounds too good to be true? There is no catch. There are no hidden agendas. There is no subscription for being a member. The choir covers the costs for music and the supply of uniform. Coach travel to certain concerts is provided from the police station where we rehearse. You will be required to fund your own travel expenses to and from rehearsals and to concerts for which transport is not provided or if you chose to travel independently.
In certain circumstances choir members may be offered reduced or free accommodation when we take part in large events which require an overnight stay in a hotel. We also attempt to fund a free social evening once a year by way of a 'thank you' for your hard work.
