We received a call just after 1.40am this morning (Wednesday 10 November) to report a serious assault in Friar Gate, Derby.
The victim a 21-year-old man was unconscious when officers arrived and was taken to hospital, where he remains in a serious condition.
A 29-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is in police custody.
Friar Gate was closed for several hours, due to a scene being in place.
The road has now reopened, and the scene has been reduced to the pedestrianised area just outside the Fat Cat bar.
