As part of a national week of appreciation, we’re highlighting the officers who work on the frontline of policing.
Our response officers are likely to be the first port of call for emergencies in Derbyshire.
Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, they attend incidents, investigate crimes and provide a visible police presence throughout the county.
No two shifts are the same for those on response, they have an essential and varied role in protecting the public, supporting victims and preventing crime.
We joined PC Silver in Derby for a day shift.
In this time, he progressed the investigation for several incidents, conducted a bail interview, patrolled Derby, and was second on the scene responding to a serious collision which closed a busy road in a town centre for several hours.
PC Silver served in the army before joining Essex Police and then transferred to Derbyshire.
In the video below he talks about his role on response, and his journey to becoming a police officer.
PC Silver’s advice for anyone interested in joining the police: “Be enthusiastic and come with some life experience.
“That might be volunteering with the Specials or doing another job. For me, being in the armed forces gave me the sort of skills that have come in handy every day in this role.”
