October is Black History Month, and for us in Derbyshire it’s a chance to celebrate the value and contribution of our Black communities.
Throughout the month, we are supporting activities and sharing messages that focus on Black History.
This year’s calendar of Black History Month events are brought to you in collaboration with Derbyshire County Council, with support from other agencies and organisations. Together we are working to recognise cultural and religious events in our calendars, as well as highlighting career paths, and other engagement opportunities.
The theme for Black History Month 2023 is ‘Saluting our Sisters'. The theme of ‘Saluting our Sisters’ emphasises the vital role black women have played in shaping history, inspiring change, and building communities.
During Black History Month we invite you to get involved, as we take you on a journey of unsung inspirational women of our time. Women who have influenced history, education, science, inventions, music, food, and medicine.
You'll be able to access a range of resources such as recipes, books, films, and events that we hope you will be able to participate in or share with others.
For information on the events we are supporting this month, please visit Black History Month 2023: 'Saluting our Sisters' - Our Derbyshire.

We are delivering a Police Race Action Plan, the purpose of which is to create a police service which is anti-racist and trusted by Black people.
The plan sets out changes that will improve outcomes for Black people who work with or interact with the police.
The plan aims to address the disparities affecting Black people and lower levels of trust and confidence in the police among some Black people.
This plan is focussed on Black people, but it will make us more inclusive and fairer to all our diverse communities.
Our plan commits us to four key areas, which further enable our communities to feel:

We aim to have a diverse workforce that is representative of the communities that we serve. We continue to work within communities and utilise positive action to support this aim. The force has a Positive action team of officers and staff that work within our communities to attract, recruit and support members of our community in the routes into our policing family.
