At our latest Celebrating Achievement Awards, we recognised volunteer Special Constable Browne as our Special Constable of the Year.
As a Special, he volunteers his time doing the same work regular constables do, only voluntary. He works in the North of the county with the Clay Cross team and responds to immediate calls for help.
Talking about his role, Special Constable Browne said, “Personally, I enjoy the wide variety of the incidents I attend. No two shifts are the same and there is always something challenging and thought provoking.
“I’ve met a lot of people during my volunteering, and I get a lot of satisfaction from helping members of the public in their moments of need.
“It’s great to be part of the process and a team that fights crime and brings offenders to justice. There’s always something new to learn and I am grateful to Derbyshire Constabulary for the opportunities to develop new skills.”
During his day job, Special Constable Browne works in IT, spending his time supporting organisations in all industries, such as manufacturing and retail, do more with their data. He helps to simplify an organisation’s processes, and helps them grow their revenue. *not sure if this repeats the second paragraph, I’d be tempted to make it ‘Despite his busy day job, he still finds time to volunteer and make a difference to communities in North Derbyshire.’ Or along those lines?
Talking about why he applied, Special Constable Browne continued, “I saw the good work that the police do on a daily basis and wanted to learn new skills, so I applied to join as a Special. It’s a worthy profession, and I wanted to give back to my local community. I’ve never looked back .
“If you want to do something that is unique, incredibly varied and challenging, but makes a big difference to the people you meet, this is for you. Derbyshire Constabulary invests in you as a person, with excellent training and equips you with the tools to succeed. I’m so happy in my role, it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made.”
Sergeant Richard Elliott added, “James is an integral part of our shift. He has worked hard to complete his accreditation to allow him to patrol independently and is always keen to learn new things.
“James’ hard work has also led to him receiving a Commendation for Bravery, he’s a fantastic member of our team, and an inspiration to the force."
We’d like to thank Special Constable Browne for the time he’s put into volunteering and appreciate all he does for us. The commitment and dedication shown by our volunteers is always astounding to see.
If you have skills you’d like to develop, we’re looking for more people like Special Constable Browne to join our team!
