Did you know it can take a thief as little as ten seconds to steal your car, or the valuables you leave in it?
Most vehicle crime is preventable, and being vigilant about your car’s security is the best way to deter criminals.
Here are a few simple and effective tactics to protect your vehicle and your valuables:
Know your vehicle – learn about the security systems and features your vehicle has. You should also consult your manufacturer’s warranty before fitting any electronic theft prevention methods.
Lock it - this may seem obvious, but a large proportion of thefts are from unlocked vehicles. Always check your vehicle is locked and the windows are up after using a key fob. Listen for the locking noise and watch for the lights to flash, or where fitted, mirrors folding.
Use physical security – traditional tools such as steering wheel locks, pedal boxes and gear stick locks are all strong visual deterrents against thieves.
Hide your valuables - keep all valuables and vehicle documents out of sight or take them from the vehicle when you leave it.
Keep your car keys safe when at home – don’t leave them in an obvious place such as the kitchen or hall table and use a Faraday pouch for keyless fobs.
Think about where you park - if possible, park your car in a well-lit area, ideally with CCTV monitoring, and in a position that makes it difficult for a thief to move quickly.
Be sure you’re secure. Don’t let thieves get an easy ride.
