Extra patrols to keep women safe on nights out

Extra officers will be hitting the streets of Derby as part of a new pilot project aimed at keeping women safe while on a night out.

The operation will see both uniformed and plain clothes officers patrolling busy night-time locations in the city to spot and deter any predatory behaviour.

Patrols will take place at varying times and locations over the next few weeks and the force is also working with partners including the city’s street pastors, door staff, taxi marshalls and CCTV operators as part of the operation.

Officers will be looking out for anyone displaying any form of predatory behaviour and then stepping in to prevent offences from taking place to protect anyone who is vulnerable.

The patrols are part of the force’s strategy to tackle violence against women and girls and will be in addition to the usual police presence in the city over the weekends.

Acting Sergeant Gemma Williamson, who is co-ordinating the operation, said: “We know how important Derby’s nightlife is to the city and its residents so we want to make sure that everyone is able to enjoy it safely.

“This pilot scheme will be taking place right through to September with all of the patrols being an addition to our regular policing coverage in the city centre as we increase the numbers of eyes and ears that are looking out for you.

“The force is committed to tackling violence against women and girls, and we hope this operation reassures the visitors of Derby that it should not be their responsibility to prevent themselves becoming victims and it is instead the role of the police to target predatory behaviour.

“We never want any woman to feel vulnerable or unsafe while on a night out in our city and we will take immediate action should anyone be seen showing signs of predatory behaviour.

“Uniformed officers will be out in the city centre at busy night times so if you’re feeling uncomfortable about anything or just want to have a chat, feel free to come and talk to us.”

You can also use the Streetsafe service to report any safety concerns you have in public places without the need to give your name or details.
